Protecting Our Sovereignty Tribal Summit 2019

WHO:

Tribal Council, Tribal Law Enforcement, Tribal Legal & Court Staff, Tribal Administrators, Tribal Directors, Casino Management & Security Staff

WHY:

  • Under the Violence Against Women’s Act (VAWA) tribes have the choice to apply for jurisdiction when a non-native person commits a crime of domestic violence on their reservation. At the summit, the U.S. Department of Justice will present on the VAWA, and the law that gives tribal jurisdiction over crimes of domestic violence. Special tribal guest speakers will discuss their experience applying for VAWA jurisdiction.

  • Also presenting will be FBI Special Agent David Schultz from the FBI Task Force on Human Trafficking, who will discuss how tribes can partner with the FBI when tribes experience human trafficking on the reservation.

  • Red Wind Casino will hold a panel discussion presentation to share protocols to help Casino staff identify, and report human trafficking.

  • Other guest speakers will discuss issues of human trafficking, child sexual exploitation, and missing and murdered indigenous women, men and children.
